Home Based Business Startup or Bust! - How I Started

Ever since I can remember, I always wanted a home based business. My name is Paul Kopp and I have run two full time businesses for the last 7 years. Stop reading as soon as you get bored!

I have a very interesting career path. I started out in the restaurant industry as a cook, server, bartender and manager. We were drilled on food costs, liquor costs, labor costs, and inventory as well as customer service. 

In the 80’s and 90’s I acquired my Real Estate License and Insurance License. I worked with Century 21 and became a million dollar producer. A few years later I sold insurance for Liberty National.

In the mid 90’s I studied accounting and became an Accounting and Collections Manager for a mid size optical manufacturing company that was later bought by Essilor. I was fascinated with computers and the technology that came with them so I taught myself everything I could about them.

Armed with accounting work experience and computer knowledge I started working in the accounting software field teaching customers how the software worked and giving technical support. I used this experience and knowledge in the Restaurant Accounting Software and then Construction Accounting Software fields.

During all of these career paths, I always had my mind open for home based business opportunities. I was never happy being tied to a major corporation for my survival. I felt that every time I went to work I was leasing my time instead of owning it.

Some of the home based businesses I have tried part time were:

Yellow Page ads, Personal Mortgage Insurance Recovery, Computer Tutoring, Air Purification Systems, Sleep Systems and Amway.

Yet none of them really were my passion.  

In 2000 I decided to quit my job and create my own home based business startup, marketing and selling end of lease and bank repossessed equipment. This is my non internet home based business. In 2003 with partners I started my first home based internet business. We sold retail remanufactured and compatible inkjet and toner cartridges. When the partnership dissolved, I acquired the online retail store myself.

There are two completely different business models used when building an internet home based business verses a non internet home based business. There are similarities but the foundations need to be built differently.

With both the home based business and the internet business I became a power seller on eBay. It was a natural second marketing outlet for both businesses. 

As you can see my experience is diverse and extensive. I have seen the good the bad and the ugly in business. In fact running my own businesses for so long has created many a story! I have had my share of business fraud on and off the internet as well.

What I tell you is from real life home based business and home based internet business experiences. I am a straight shooter and will tell you what I have learned in all my years of “on the job training”. With each type of business I started I used different technologies, business products and services.
